It is important that you read and re-read this page before you consider undergoing this surgery.

In the early days, in an effort to remove facial wrinkles and give the the face a firmer look,  all the excess skin from the face was pulled upward and the excess trimmed away. This resulted in an un-natural  ‘stretched’ look that made it apparent to everyone that a  facelift had been performed. Today procedures have evolved in both technique and results so that the surgery is no longer traumatic and the outcome provides a natural, rejuvenated appearance.

In a rhytidectomy, focus can be be on specific areas such as the neck including (click Neck Liposculpture  and/ or Chin Liposculpture); the mid-face which encompasses cheeks, nose (click Rhinoplasty) and ears (Click Prominent Ears); or upper-face  including upper and/or lower eyelids (Click Eyelid Surgery),  and the forehead. These procedures can be done individually or in combination.

Depending on the areas that are going to be worked on, this surgery takes 2 to 4 hours. It is  done under local anesthesia and IV sedation meaning that the patient is maintained pain free in a pleasant state of twilight. You will be able to follow verbal instructions during the surgery, although there is no recollection after surgery.

The face is bandaged following surgery and there may be a temporary drain in place to remove fluid from the surgical site. Usually this procedure requires a day spent at the clinic; you can go home the next morning. The dressings and drains are removed two days following surgery.

The scars left by these surgeries are surprisingly un-noticeable. Stitches are placed within the hair and in the fold behind the ear. After healing, they are virtually invisible to the patient or others. Stitches around the eyes are removed on the sixth day and all others on the 10th day after surgery.

It’s likely you will feel some numbness in certain areas for a month or so. It is not permanent and the sensation will return gradually. You may notice bruising and sometimes irregular contour in different places in the neck after 10 to 14 days. This is temporary and normal will improve by itself.

Below are some important pointers regarding “before and after” facelift surgery:

1. Do not take aspirin or aspirin products for 2 to 3 weeks prior to surgery. (Click Non recommended Medicines for more information.)
3. For three consecutive nights before surgery wash the entire face and ears with Isodine foam (Betadine in the US) shampoo. Your pharmacist may suggest an alternative product if you are unable to find it.
4. Do not eat food or drink any fluids  from 12 PM the night before surgery.
5. For your own convenience, bring loose comfortable clothes with zippers or buttons.

I present below some important pointers before and after cosmetic surgery of the nose:

1. Go directly home and remain at rest for 24 to 48 hours.  Rest and sleep on your back  not on your side.
2. You may get up to use the toilet and for meals only.
3.The first day at home you should take sips of fluids, gradually increasing to a soft diet. If you do not have nausea, you can eat normally.
4. Take your medicine as directed. You cannot drink alcohol during your recovey.
5. Apply small ice gel packs to the surgical sites every 4 hours for 15 minutes.
6. Avoid the sun, hot meals, hot baths and hot environment for a week;
7. Do not sunbathe during the first 30 days to prevent blotchy pigmentation.
8. Bathe in tepid water for at least the first 10 days after surgery.  Do not allow running water on your face.
9. The first 7 to 12 days you should not flex, bend, or stretch the neck  to preventinternal bleeding. Turn the upper body and head as a single unit when you wish to turn your head.
10. Avoid using pillows in those early days, so your neck won’t be flexed.
